Interview Tips | Confident Job Interview
Who isn’t nervous during a job interview?
Not even the most self-confident job candidate will escape moments of self-doubt especially if it is a while since the last job interview attended. Indeed you may be someone who has little or no experience of attending interviews. But no matter whatever the level of experience what you must do is to learn to present an image of confidence but not overconfidence. The more interviews you attend the more confidence you will acquire. One of my employees used to have an interview every six months and would tell me was going! He did explain that he had no intention of leaving but had a policy of an interview every six months just to keep in practice. This is great advice to anyone who has a confidence problem when being interviewed.
Remember why you are going to the interview, your potential employer is looking for the best candidate for the job and that employer would prefer to see a job candidate who is confident in their abilities.
For a naturally shy person making eye contact is both very difficult to do and to maintain. Unfortunately nothing exposes poor self-confidence more and so it is something that has to be mastered.
When you walk into the interview or are greeted by your interviewer offer your hand and look the person in the eye and with a smile express your delight in meeting them, the old saying about first impressions is so true.
You know that once seated the interview questions will come thick and fast and your brain will have to react accordingly. Easier said than done but do your best not to panic. Giving an immediate interview answer to a question may seem to display confidence but your questioner will prefer you to think through the question for a moment and, rather than answering the question you at first thought was being asked, give a relative and constructive answer. There may be more depth to the question than your initial understanding.
The tell me about yourself interview question arises at nearly every interview questions and answers session and yet so many people stumble over what should be the easiest question of the day. Prepare beforehand and promote yourself when giving a response, after all you are trying to capture this job for you and nobody else and you know yourself better than anyone. For example, rather than answering a question by saying that you helped with a project, say that you were part of the project team and played a key role in bringing the project to a successful completion. The same rule applies when creating your resume.
At the end of the interview you will be asked if you have any questions about the job and company. Prepare those questions beforehand and then you will not appear to be panicking when asked.
If you are not a naturally confident person you could try reading a book and / or listening to hypnosis recordings. Give the hypnosis recordings a chance and they may work for you but do not expect overnight miracles. Glenn Harrold has produced an excellent series of self-help hypnosis CDs. Get the Job You Want is a package that includes a four page booklet that tells you how to focus on the vocation you would like to attract into your life and a high quality audio hypnotherapy CD which will then help you attain that success.
